State health officials say they have seen a record number of human cases of West Nile Virus this year.
The Virginia Department of Health reports there have been 38 cases of the mosquito-borne illness in people across the Commonwealth, two of which were in the Central Virginia area.
VDH says the most effective way to avoid WNV and other mosquito-borne disease is to prevent bites.
Prevention strategies can include using insect repellent, wearing long sleeve shirts and long pants and eliminating breeding locations where standing water can accumulate.
