On February 16, Shelia Talbott will demonstrate open-hearth cooking in Ash Lawn-Highland’s reconstructed slave quarters. Open hearth cook Shelia Talbott will discuss the many contributions of enslaved African-Americans to American Cuisine. Shelia Talbott is a native Virginian who has conducted hearth cooking and living history programming for various historic sites depicting time periods from the earliest English settlement in Virginiato American Civil War. She has over 23 years living history experience, with emphasis on the EarlyRepublicand the War of 1812. Talbott has studied period clothing construction techniques at Colonial Williamsburg, The Valentine Museum, in Richmond, the DARArchives Washington, DC and the V&AMuseumin London. 1-4 PM. On February 22, 2013Dr. Gene Allen Smith, professor of history and director of the Center for Texas Studies at Texas Christian University will discuss his most recent book, The Slaves’ Gamble: Choosing Sides in the War of 1812 at Ash Lawn-Highland on Friday, February 22. The book explores the history-changing decisions made by African-American combatants in the crucial conflict, and how the opportunity to fight changed the course of slavery in America. Co-sponsored by Dan Preston, editor of the Papers of James Monroe. 4:00 PMwith book signing immediately following Dr. Smith’s discussion. Free and open to the public.
