Second Street Gallery is pleased to present “Decoration/Destruction” its first group exhibition since 2010, featuring the work of Olga Antonova, Laurent Crasté, and Cheryl Pope.
Each of the artists included on this exhibition use traditional porcelain vessels as the inspiration for work that ranges from sculpture to painting, photography and video. Themes include the historical and symbolic uses and meanings of porcelain, even as a political tool, as well as the quotidian and social implications of its role as household objects. The artists present the antithetical qualities of the material- its strength and fragility- almost as an anthropomorphic proposition. It’s an intriguing exhibition that examines, with a contemporary voice, the many layers and meanings of decorative collectibles: as indicators of social status and class, and demonstrators of power, wealth and politics.
Cheryl Pope is represented by Dorsch Gallery, Miami, Olga Antonova by Beth Urdang Gallery, Boston, and Laurent Crasté is represented by Galerie SAS in Toronto. Second Streetwould like to thank these galleries for lending the works on view.
“Decoration/Destruction”will be on view at Second Street Gallery, 115 Second Street SE, Charlottesville, from April 5- June 1, 2013. There will be an opening reception for First Fridays, April 5, from 5:30-7:30pm, with an artist talk by Olga Antonova at 6:30pm.
