There is no charge for watching and only a $10 fee per paddler for participation cost (primarily event insurance cost).
This race is open to all ages but is not recommended for those who have no experience with whitewater paddling. This 6.2 mile course starts at the 29 North Put-In at the stoplight of Polo Grounds/Rio Mills Rd., just past the bridge, turn left (west). The gate and registration will begin at 8:30 am and the first heat will depart at 10 am. This race involves eleven sets of rapids and two are rated Class II. Racers will be defined by vessel length, class ie canoe or kayak and both solo and tandem categories.
Spectators may view this race from a limited number of locations. At the NS Railroad tressle at the east end of Northfield Rd. (just off Rio Road), at the riverside area of Pen Park (off east Rio Road), and along the riverbanks of Darden Towe Park. There will be river related displays at Darden Towe Park and a refreshment stand. Activities will begin around 10 am at Darden Towe and finish with the awards at approximately 12:30 pm.
To facilitate practice runs down this course, the gate at the 29 North Put-In will be opened on the afternoon of May 3 through sundown on May 5.
If you've got interest in this thrilling water sport, be at the finish line. Last year's 1st place winner was only 20 seconds ahead of 2nd place in the solo kayak division.
