Carole Thorpe's "It Ain't Over 'til the Fat Lady Sings"
Hospice of the Piedmont’s Music by the Bedside program employs the therapeutic benefits of music to play a role in healing and soothing our patients, their caregivers, and families. This year, a benefit concert will be held to raise money for the donation-funded Music by the Bedside program. The concert will be held on Saturday, November 9, from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church on Park Street in Charlottesville.
Music has always played an important role in healing – it has the ability to bring a stressed body into harmony and encourages the release of endorphins to help ease pain. It has also been shown to reduce blood pressure boost the immune system and can provide emotional release for both patients and caregivers.
Music by the Bedsideprogram brings the beauty of instrumental and vocal music into the lives and homes of Hospice of the Piedmont patients. This program allows skilled music practitioners to play customized, soothing music for patients living in the Hospice House, nursing homes and assisted living facilities, and in private homes, as requested. The program is coordinated by Kate Tamarkin, a Certified Music Practitioner trained specifically to provide music to seriously ill and dying patients in a variety of private and clinical settings.
The fundraising concert will offer an evening of delightful music – everything from Bach, Debussy, and Chopin to Simon and Garfunkel, Phantom of the Opera, Spanish guitar, and lively Celtic favorites. Eight of the area’s finest and most popular musicians will perform both together and separately, including four harpists, a flutist, a cellist, and a pianist.
