Ryan Inaugurated As UVA’s Ninth President

James E. Ryan was inaugurated as the University of Virginia’s ninth president in a ceremony on the Lawn Friday.

Ryan said in his inaugural address that he wants to eventually make tuition free for in-state students from families making less than $80,000 a year, and for students from Virginia families making under $30,000, he wants to add free room and board.

Ryan said he recognizes UVA’s dark past, but that there is still a lot to celebrate. Women are the majority of students and more than 400 first-year students are first-generation college students.

He said he hopes to continue that progress.
