Virginia Officials Demobilizing State-Managed Shelters

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) are in the process of closing and demobilizing state-managed shelters after Tropical Storm Florence ended up hitting the Carolinas.

In a release Friday, state officials said crews would be closing shelters at the College of William and Mary and Christopher Newport University At the peak occupancy, there were 52 residents in state-managed shelters.

State officials said they would make sure any occupants were relocated before shelters closed.

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management is in touch with North and South Carolina officials to offer assistance with the response to Florence.
